Lonely Planet review

More boutique chic than backpacker grunge, the Beehive is one of the best hostels in town. Run by a young American couple, it's an oasis of style with original art works, funky modular furniture, a vegetarian cafe and a walled garden.

To ensure a bed here you'll need to get onto it early as it's very popular with discerning, environmentally-conscious travellers. Owners Steve and Linda are deeply committed to the green cause and throughout the hostel you'll find evidence of their ecological convictions. Homemade soap is provided in bathrooms, food at the on-site cafe is organic and sourced locally, there are recycling bins and there's no air-con, just ceiling fans and barred windows. But this is no sandals-and-socks hangout - the decor is bright, bold and modern, and everywhere there's an air of contemporary calm. Beds are in a spotless eight-person mixed dorm or in one of six private double rooms, all of which come with sinks (bathrooms are shared). There's free internet and guests are welcome to workout in the small yoga studio.
