Lonely Planet Review
A homely pensione, the Hotel Ercoli has sparkling clean rooms furnished with one eye on convenience (hence the telephone, TV and hairdryer) and the other eye, well, shut. The chintzy decor is nothing to get excited about. Still, breakfast is included and the owner is a friendly chap.
You'll need to brush up on your Italian - or your sign language - when you stay here. The helpful owners speak almost no English, but after 20 years in the hotel business have become adept at non-verbal communication. At the upper end of the budget scale, the Ercoli offers 14 no-nonsense rooms on the 3rd floor of a large residential palazzo 15 minutes from Termini. As in many similar buildings the lift is tiny but the rooms are spacious, well equipped (at least for the price), and good value. The en suites are small and large folk may have trouble squeezing into the thin shower cubicles. The water temperature can also play up, switching suddenly from hot to cold. Quibbles aside, this place is a straight up pensione with few frills but all the basics.
