Pleasant and reserved, the Casa Condell is a quiet spot to catch up on your Zs. Walkers will find it in reach of most city sights. There's no sign, just the street number to indicate this jumbo pastel colonial amid the fancy mansions and iron lamp posts.

Ideal for social folks a bit beyond the backpacking stage, the house offers affordable, plain accommodation. A smart addition, the shaded roof deck, is a great place to read or enjoy a drink sprawled on the cushioned sofas. Inside, a generous heap of glossy mags and freshly cut flowers invite you to linger on the old crushed-velvet sofas. The dining room has a proper table conducive to cooking but you'll find the kitchen rather cramped. While rooms are spare and beds have had their heyday, they provide a generous amount of space, lit by large windows.
