These former Picardie Apartments (circa 1934) still retain considerable Art Deco charm, most noticeably in the fine exterior, the rectangular black and white floor pattern of the lobby and the 1930s touches throughout.

The quality of the Hengshan Hotel has been elevated over recent years, with renovations and investment restoring some crispness and gloss to both the service and presentation. The reception area of this four-star hotel is smart and staff are well-attired, but remain prepared for occasionally sluggish service, typical of Chinese-managed hotels of this calibre. Rooms have character: the 'A' Superior Rooms are voluminous - especially if you get a corner room - and bathrooms are spacious (with TV), even though the furniture is old-style. The cheapest standard rooms are smaller and may require you to walk up one or two flights of stairs. The location is good, between Hengshan Rd and the Xujiahui shopping district.
