Capped by its distinctive clock tower - a motif that morphs crudely into the flying saucer on top of the Radisson that's virtually next door - this historic three-star hotel is strong on both character and style, despite the rather seedy-looking spa off the lobby.

It's lovely just stooging about the small but grand foyer of this Chinese-managed hotel. Note the chiselled sign outside the classical facade that declares 'Welcome' - and staff make an effort, but management makes few exertions to convincingly woo international guests. Nonetheless, rooms are cheaper than at the more celebrated Park to the west. The location is just as good, even if there isn't the Art Deco appeal of its more famous rival. To maximise the charms of the Pacific, angle for the pricier doubles overlooking Renmin Park rather than the cheaper ones tossed round the back, although you still need to endure tired-looking furniture in all rooms. The Travel Service at ground level can be useful for scraps of travel info and ticketing.
