Lonely Planet Review

The Mariners Court is a tucked-away treasure that offers great value for money and welcoming service. It won't be the flashest place you'll stay in Sydney, but it certainly offers a rare combination of location, price and extra features (including air-conditioning) that have ensured its popularity with many regulars, including members of the odd touring orchestra or two.

All the rooms (there are 40 over three floors) here have courtyards or balconies and there are some nice leafy outlooks available. The main colour-scheme consists of blue and cream in a nod to the building's maritime connections (it was the Sydney Sailors' Home at one point), and while some corridors can recall hospital wards, it pays to recast them in a cruise-ship light - they're wide, spartan and shipshape. Laundry facilities are available, as is a big bathtub if you can't face another shower. The BBQ area and pool table offer good opportunities to get to know other guests.

How to Get There

There is a shuttle transfer from the airport at approx $12 per person, this will bring you to the door of the hotel. If there are two or more people for a little extra (from approx $35) it is quicker by taxi. Please remind the taxi driver that McElhone Street can only be accessed via Cowper Wharf Rd (the water end), diagonally opposite Harry's Cafe De Wheels.
Bus: 311 service from Circular Quay or Railway Square, Cowper Wharf Rd stop.
Train: Kings Cross Station is the closest at approx 10 minutes walk, down Victoria Street and McElhone Steps (100).
Car: From the north: Harbour tunnel (not cross city tunnel), keep to the left as Woolloomooloo is first exit out of the tunnel. Then turn left into Cowper Wharf Rd, follow this road until McElhone St, which is the second street on the right from after the Shell petrol station.
From South: Williams Street, Palmer St, Cowper Wharf Rd

Explore the streets of this historic, slightly salty neighbourhood or head to the bright lights of Kings Cross for nightlife. The city centre and Circular Quay lie east of the hotel and are only a 30-minute stroll away through the Domain or Royal Botanic Gardens.
