Lonely Planet Review

There are a few YHA hostels in Sydney, but this is the one that really captured our attention and held it - its location is so central it's almost a part of Central station and its facilities are far better than you'd generally expect with a budget price tag. Another bonus? It's reliably run and a social place.

Double rooms here have large bunks (with a double bed) and can sleep three people - so fork out the extra bucks for a bathroom of your own and you need never know that you're in a hostel. While the decor leans more to the functional side of things than the fancy - everything is in good working order and has a fair bit of pizzazz. We love the fact that some of the dorm accommodation is in a few New South Wales' old 'red rattler' train carriages. All the rooms here have windows too - a nice touch in a city that has far too many airless boxes masquerading as budget accommodation. All up, you'll find 280 spots to sleep here, but also a lot of people keen to do so, so book ahead.

How to Get There

From the airport take a train to Central Railway Station. Use the Devonshire Street exit from the station and walk through the pedestrian tunnel. At the end of the tunnel take the stairs up to the right to the hostel. Alternatively Airport Shuttlebuses drop off opposite the hostel at Railway Square.
From Sydney Coach Terminal turn left into Pitt Street and walk one block toward Railway Square. Turn left into Upper Carriage Lane past the front door of the Medina Apartments.
Railway Square is the area that is at the junction of George Street, Pitt Street and Lee Street. The hostel is located behind the Medina Apartments, 2 Lee Street.

Show your YHA/Hostelling International membership card when checking in, or join YHA on arrival, and receive a discount of at least 10% off the standard rates.

Author Tip

You'll have no difficulty accessing anything from this transport hub, but why not go down to Circular Quay and see the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and The Rocks? Heading the other way, trawl through shops, pubs and eateries in either Newtown of Glebe, or take a train all the way to the Blue Mountains.
