Despite its location on a slightly sinister street in the center, the Botero Plaza has a remarkably swish reception. Rooms are less up-to-date but are comfortable enough, and those on higher floors afford excellent views. Full Lonely Planet Review ›

About Medellín (The Northwest)

One of Medellín's historic buildings converted into a modern commercial center (Photographer: Krzysztof Dydynski)

Notorious for cocaine cartels in the 1980s, Medellín has cleaned up its act and is now one of Colombia's safest big cities. Surrounded by rugged Andean peaks on all four sides, the views are breathtaking - it also has a supercharged cultural scene and paisas (locals) with a knack for enjoying life.
