Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Impressive, in a word. One of the gigantic, glittery gems comprising the new Shiodome complex adjacent to the Hama-Rikyu Garden, the Conrad is definitely a contender for the attentions of upscale travellers looking for a central, super-sophisticated base in Tokyo.

Dual themes of relaxation and energising inform the decor of these rooms, with city or garden views and red or green colour schemes. Whichever you choose, you will find varnished hardwoods, cushy rugs and Shiseido bath products exclusively formulated for the Conrad. And the enormous bathrooms invite you to spend quality time in them: with rainshower fixtures in addition to regular showerheads, separate free-standing tubs, enormous round vanity mirrors, and (the best feature) floor-to-ceiling glass walls facing the window. Draw the automated wooden blinds for privacy, but the openness makes you feel like you're bathing outdoors in the middle of downtown Tokyo. Extras such as hotel cell phones that forward calls from your room are some of the superlative perks. Also find a gym overlooking the 25m pool, huge plasma TVs and, overall, a large-scale, elegant aesthetic.

How To Get There

Haneda Airport is served by the Keihin Kyuko Railway and the Tokyo Monorail. The nearest station to the hotel is Shimbashi, on the Keihin Kyuko and JR Yamanote lines. Taxis are available from the airport, but are expensive. The easiest and best way to get around Tokyo is on the extensive rail and underground network. Fares start at 130 JPY, and pre-paid Metro cards are available for 1,000 JPY. The trains are generally very crowded during rush hour.
Driving directions: Follow Kanto highway from Haneda to Tokyo. Exit the highway, following signs to Shimbashi or Shiodome.

Author Tip

Once your business day is done, decompress with a walk through Hama-Rikyu Garden. Though surrounded by highrises, this garden dates from the Edo period and is arguably Tokyo's best. Take a walk beside Tokyo Bay and consider hopping onto a Sumida River cruise from here, disembarking in Asakusa for a look at Senso-ji and a taste of old-town Tokyo.

Curious Fact

Shiodome was where Japanese railways began, with the first services between here and Yokohama launched in 1872. The Old Shimbashi Station Railway History Exhibition Hall (tel 03-3572-1872) is nearby, located beside the Shiodome City Center Building. It has a small but colourful collection of displays on railway history in Japan, with some text and audiovisual materials in English.
