The New Otani's garden is, happily, accessible to the public and worth wandering around during the day. By night, reserve a table at one of the restaurants set within the garden for a memorable dinner.
Curious Fact
The hotel's 10-acre garden, one of Tokyo's finest, is a delight in any season. During its 400 year history it came into the hands of the Ii family, influential in the shogunate government of the Edo period (1600-1868). Ii Naosuke (1815-1860) oversaw the signing of the first Japan-US commerce treaty, which opened the country to foreign business, but he was unpopular with old-regime loyalists. He was assassinated by a gang of young samurai in front of the Sakuradamon Gate to Edo Castle in 1860; the centuries-old shogunal regime fell less than a decade later.
