Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Yes, it's just as it looks in Lost in Translation, which was filmed on location here. Views are stunning, day or night, and you almost feel like you are in another world from the serene heights of the Park Hyatt. Both public and private spaces of the hotel are notable for their understated elegance.

This swank hotel feels like the guest wing of your favourite rich uncle's house. Maybe you're lucky enough to have one; if not, this is certainly the next best thing. Staff are gracefully, discreetly attentive. Dignified but relaxed, the stylishly understated rooms are filled with light and feel like a floating island above Shinjuku. Bathrooms feature liberal hunks of marble, with separate tubs and showers; rooms themselves are made up in naturally finished woods and fabrics. Free DVD rental, high-speed Internet access and 24-hour room service are among the courtesies offered here, and free shuttle buses run daily between the hotel and Shinjuku station. Western views toward Mt Fuji are good in the clear air of winter; eastern views are preferable otherwise, for the glittering night-time skyline.

Author Tip

You've seen the film. Why not cultivate some rock-star mystique by having an afternoon cocktail at the New York Bar, where you'll feel you've been before. And if that cocktail turns into two or three, you'll have one of the best seats in Tokyo for sunset colours bursting and fading above Tokyo.
