Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Staying in this tucked-away Iriya inn, run by a friendly English-speaking family, is an unpretentious affair. Both Western- and Japanese-style rooms are clean and comfortable, but since they're comparably priced, do yourself the favour of sleeping in a tatami one. With the futon rolled away for the day, it will feel more open and homey. About half the rooms have attached baths, but all have access to the communal baths. The baths and dining area do the job readily enough but offer little superfluous charm; they feel like extensions of the innkeepers' suburban home, which isn't such a bad thing. Ten rooms are Japanese style, while the remaining eight are unremarkable Western-style quarters. Japanese or Western breakfasts are a reasonable price. Internet access is available in the lobby.

Author Tip

Iriya is the perfect jumping-off point to Kappabashi-dori, the street specialising in restaurant-supply shops. You can find everything from beautiful bargain ceramics, noren (dyed doorway curtains) and - everyone's favourite - plastic food models (they don't come cheap, though). A refreshing place to eat is Rumor Cafe & Bar (3-2-11 Matsugaya, Taito-ku), serving Mexican rice, curries and free internet.
