Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The Chinggis Khaan is a big, brash hotel lying close to downtown. It was built soon after the fall of communism in the early 1990s and designed as a place of refuge for visiting diplomats and heads of state. It has all the facilities you could dream of, plus well-appointed rooms, although service tends to be inconsistent.

The Chinggis Khaan has an unmistakable facade that makes for an impressive entrance to Mongolia. The cubist design built with pink tile and glass is meant to evoke the 'steppes' of Mongolia. The hotel has a total of 194 rooms spread over 12 floors. Rooms have a contemporary design and mod-cons such as ADSL internet cable, IDD phone and satellite TV. The views toward downtown are best, so ask for a west-facing room. Two restaurants (Chinese and continental) offer excellent cuisine while the Resto Pub on the fifth floor is a fine place for a drink. Other facilities include a travel agent, indoor swimming pool, fitness centre, shopping mall and wireless internet access in the lobby. While it functions quite well most of the time, compared to bona fide international five star hotels, the service here is decidedly average.

Author Tip

Wrestling is Mongolia's national sport and you can catch some of the action in the Wrestling Palace, located south of the Chinggis Khaan Hotel on Peace Ave. Tickets are cheap, only two or three dollars, and once you are inside the seating is general admission. Tournaments are not held according to any set schedule so check the local papers to find out if any are coming up.
