Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Ulaanbaatar's original 'ger & breakfast' is still chugging along. Located near Gandan Monastery, owner Gana offers accommodation in gers (yurts) or in a newer concrete block. Despite the rustic setting, it has modern toilet and shower facilities, plus rooms with private bath.

Gana's was the first guesthouse to open in Ulaanbaatar and originally consisted of several gers inside a hashaa (fenced yard) in the suburbs. It has grown over the years and to economise on space, the gers are now located on the roof of the guesthouse. Other guesthouses in the town centre have surpassed Gana's in popularity, but this one still remains a favourite of hard-core overland travellers. It's the only one that still offers a genuine Mongol experience, making it very worthwhile. Amenities at the guesthouse include free Internet, 24-hour hot water and 24-hour security. Although the place is located in a ger suburb, it's still convenient to the centre of the city - you can walk to the State Department Store in less than 10 minutes.

Author Tip

From Gana's guesthouse it's a short walk to Mongolia's best-known monastery, the 19th-century Gandan Khiid. Spreading across a broad hill overlooking the city, the monastery attracts pilgrims from all over the country. The major sight within the complex is the extraordinary Migjid Janraisig Süm, which contains a 20m-tall gold and bronze statue of Janraisig. Come at around 10am to watch monks perform services.

Curious Fact

Gana's is Mongolia's longest-running guesthouse.
