Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Genex is a straight-laced hotel with bland rooms overlooking a quiet street close to Gandan Monastery and Peace Ave. Some attempt has been made to create a European atmosphere, including frilly drapes and tacky Greek statues in the hall. The lux rooms are a little odd-looking, with two queen-size beds pushed into a triangular shaped alcove.

The hotel contains just 16 rooms, making it small enough for personalized service. Rooms are plainly furnished but come with the usual amenities, including telephone, TV, radio and minibar. There is a karaoke bar downstairs, although whether or not this adds to the hotel's charm is debatable. There are also two restaurants, and Internet access is available for an hourly fee. The Genex is not the best option in this range, the Kharaa down the road is a better pick, but in high season it will be fine if other places are full.

Author Tip

Take a stroll down Peace Ave one evening and be astounded at the amazing variety of people that inhabit Ulaanbaatar's main drag. A ten-minute walk could lead you past mohawked punks, red-robed monks, del-clad grannies and mobile-phone-toting teens. Enjoy the European atmosphere of restaurants, Internet cafes, fashion shops and any number of shiny new SUVs. This is the new Mongolia - savour it for all its worth.
