Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Amiable host Idre runs this single-floor guesthouse with several dorms and private rooms that have a total of 42 beds. There is a central lounge and a small kitchen, plus Internet facilities (for an hourly fee). It's located in a dusty corner of town near the old long-distance bus station.

The guesthouse has a compact layout with small rooms radiating off a lounge - in high season there are lots of comings and goings. The interior is clean, comfortable, brightly-lit and there is even a small book exchange. Lots of travellers end up here, so it's easy to find others to make a tour. The location of the place leaves something to be desired; it's stuck on a busy roadside amid tumbledown shops and apartments. Thankfully, it's just a short 10-minute walk to the downtown shops. Idre has been running guesthouses in Ulaanbaatar for years and has lots of experience in budget tours and logistics help. If you are keen to do a short trip to the countryside, Idre runs a ger in Töv Aimag, less than one hour from the city.

Author Tip

A wander through the apartment blocks in an easterly direction eventually lands you at the blue-topped state circus. During Communist times a visit to the circus was a major form of entertainment for Ulaanbaatar's citizenry - the highlight being the world famous contortionists. The circus still performs and you can check the local papers for starting times.
