Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The Soviet-era Mandukhai has seen some renovations of late, including new bathrooms, drapes and carpeting in the rooms. However, none of these improvements have reached the hallways so it still appears very run-down. While it's unlikely to feature highly on your wish list of places to stay, many backpackers end up here when the neighbourhood guesthouses are full.

When it first opened in the 1980s the Mandukhai was one of the better hotels in town, but then there wasn't much competition. The Mandukhai's best days are long gone but it remains a busy little place, with a snooker table in the basement and a popular restaurant that serves Mongolian food. The recent room renovations are a step in the right direction and the Mandukhai seems habitable, at least for a few days. Probably the best feature of the hotel is its central location.

Author Tip

A couple hundred metres east of the Mandukhai is Juulchin Gudamj (Tourist St). While development of the area is slow, there is still reason to visit, including the opportunity the browse through the collections of several antique shops. Stop by the Nayra Cafe when you need a shopping break - it offers excellent coffee, bakery treats and light meals.
