Lonely Planet Review

Quotes In a quiet area surrounded by embassies, the Mika is a retreat from the downtown hustle and bustle. It's small, containing just 22 rooms, but offers a business centre and sauna. Rooms come equipped with TV and a modern bath, which is fine, although the furnishings are jumbled and unattractive.

The atmosphere of the Mika is decidedly low-key. It's in a gated site without any foot traffic nearby so there is not a lot of life to the place. Perhaps the most unique element to the hotel is the enormous deluxe room, which contains a fully fledged kitchen, a living room and a bedroom. While it's designed for two, it certainly feels like you could cram a minor Mongol horde inside. It does not have any sort of elegant feel, but fits the bill if you are looking for tons of space to spread out in or need to park a couple of yaks. The Mika also has a restaurant (Mongolian and European fare) where a complimentary breakfast is served.

Author Tip

Near the Mika Hotel is the Choijin Lama Monastery-Museum, one of the most spectacular relics of ancient Ulaanbaatar. The monastery was once home to the state oracle and the brother of the Bogd Khaan. Today its open to the public as a museum and contains a rich collection of thangkas (scroll paintings) and tsam masks used in religious ceremonies.
