Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Campo Santa Margarita is one of Venice's liveliest squares, with market stalls selling fresh produce during the day, a smattering of restaurants and bars, and plenty of early evening-buzz. If you're looking for a no-frills budget hotel in the heart of the action you could do worse than try the Antico Capon.

The main building's yellow facade beams warmly onto the square, and the rooms here are the best the hotel has to offer. The en suite shower rooms are relatively clean, the decor is simple and the views of the square are charming though noisy (the rooms facing the back are quieter). The other eight rooms -in a separate building - feel like a bit of an afterthought. They could be cleaner and are slightly shoddy with cupboards that don't close properly and shower doors that leak. D4 has a balcony that would be sweet if the broken shutters didn't threaten to impale you on exposed nails on the way out there. Breakfast is served in a choice of three restaurants on the square ensuring that you can usually sit in the sun. Head to the one with the red awning for the best croissants.

Author Tip

Join the throngs of young Italians wearing oversized shades in the Campo Santa Margarita, and sip an early evening spritz (Italian white wine and soda with Campari or Aperol), the Venetian aperitif of choice. As the sun goes down you can soak up the atmosphere and almost fool yourself you are a local (make sure your sunglasses are large enough, though).

Curious Fact

Rather bafflingly, Antico Capon can either be translated as old boss (as in mafia) or castrated chicken. The current owners don't know why the hotel should be named after either of these things, but they found an old plate with a chicken design from 1962 (when the place was a restaurant with rooms), which may explain it. Another story claims the inn used to be named Al Capone...
