Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The owners of Ca' Angeli, brothers Giorgio and Matteo, are so enthusiastic about the house which they inherited from their uncle Angelo and converted into a hotel that it's impossible not to fall for the place - especially if you are a fan of antiques.

The brothers' uncle was an architect with a passion for restoration and the hotel is crammed with antiques that he collected over the years. There are 100-150-year-old rugs, 18th-century chests, original Murano glass chandeliers, 17th-century paintings and a number of angels dating from the 16th century to the present day. The marvellous sitting room with window seats perched over the Grand Canal, restored Louis XIV sofa, and an antique bureau trumeau (sideboard) apparently worth the cost of a small apartment, is a real find. The spacious room No 1 has a view of the Grand Canal and the hotel's only whirlpool bath. No 5 is small but has a superb terrace with vista of San Marco's campanile (bell tower)and the tip of the Salute Church. There's also a suite of interconnecting rooms in the attic which is ideal for families.

How To Get There

Ca' Angeli is situated in the heart of historical Venice, about 10 minutes from the car terminal at Piazzale Roma and the Santa Lucia railway station, near the Rialto Bridge and 2 minutes from the St. Silvestro boat-stop (boat: Line n. 1). (when you get off from San Silvestro boat stop going straight on (except for one small jog left and right) you will reach "Campo San Aponal " (a square, with a church and a well in the centre), turn left and take the little street called "Calle de mezo" (there's a library called Giunti on the corner before that street) go through this street till the end and you will arrive in another little square called "Campiello Meloni"; then you should see a Pastry shop ("Rizzardini"), take the street on the left of this pastry shop. turn right then left, and after 10 metres you will be arrived at Ca' Angeli.). If you decide to take a water-taxi, from or to the Marco Polo Airport, the landing-stage "Tragheto della Madoneta" is 15 metres from the house entrance.

Author Tip

The sitting room window seats are the ideal posts from which to watch the Regata Storica (historical regatta) in September. Admire the procession of boats powered by crews in period dress and the four races which follow - the highlight is the men competing in gondolini (the sporty version of a gondola).
