Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This hotel has a lofty aim - to fuse accommodation and Modern Art into a unique experience - and it's well on the way to achieving it. Large canvases painted by Michele Pornaro, the owner (Nicola)'s brother, span the walls, and interesting sculptures and light installations dot the bright communal areas.

After a slightly dingy alley, the mainly 20th-century orange-painted Ca' Pozzo is a bright-but-ugly duckling that turns into a swan inside. All rooms are resolutely modern with king-size beds and sleek black-painted oak or chestnut furniture. One wing has timber ceilings and pastellone Veneziano (crushed brick) floors - the hotel's largest room (No 208) is here. Another room, (No 107) has a coveted private courtyard. The luxurious bathrooms are lined with pietra d'Italia stone and feature designer trough sinks, torrential-rain shower heads and lashings of chrome. Two rooms are suitable for disabled guests and the nearby Ponte della Guglie has a ramp. This hotel positively glows with hip modern decor and art. Look out for an amazing light shaped like an aluminium sea anemone, Magic Faraway Tree-style sculptures in bark and specially commissioned Murano glass lamps.

Author Tip

Just around the corner from the hotel lies the world's first Ghetto (not that the Venetians are unduly proud of this fact). The Museu Ebraico runs fascinating tours of the elaborately decorated synagogues skulking in the tall buildings. Tours in English leave hourly.

Curious Fact

Pozzo means 'well' in English so the owners think there must have been a well near the hotel in ye olden times. There are no traces of it now, unless you fancy digging under the passageway (but that may be illegal).
