Tucked up a little alley, this hotel is well placed for the Jewish Ghetto and Museu Ebraico and is walking distance from the train station. Rooms are a good size and feature unusually colourful bathrooms, including one with a pillar-box-red toilet seat.

If you're lucky you'll be greeted by the moustached owner Leo Silva wearing a patterned jacket and a big smile. Next you'll see the Venetian masks on the walls of a snug wood-panelled reception with timber ceiling, and the small garden where people tuck into packaged croissants (sadly common in budget hotels in Venice) for breakfast. Up a tidy stone staircase, the rooms have beamed ceilings and views over the breakfast area or the street. The bathrooms have been picked from a varied palette and veer from red (belonging to No 7 - if you can get over the bright colour the bathroom is really spacious) to blue which mightn't go down well if too many spritzes (Italian white wine and soda with Campari or Aperol) the day before mean your stomach matches the decor. The hotel also owns practical apartments for up to six people near Ca D'Oro.
