Lonely Planet Review
The Gritti Palace was originally built in 1525 to house a Doge of Venice, Andrea Gritti. Since opening as a luxury hotel in the last century it has played host to royalty of both the crowned and Hollywood variety and is considered one of Venice's best places to stay.
Out of the 90 rooms only 15 have a Grand Canal view, but the accommodation itself is a scintillating sight. The Venetian rooms dressed with hand-painted panelled walls and Gritti family portraits are a favourite. But with marble bathrooms, 15th-century wooden ceilings, antique furniture, plush carpets, complimentary robes and slippers and excellent 24-hour service, a stay in any room is truly luxurious. The communal areas are a dazzling tableau of chandeliers glimmering against marble, but not overly large, which produces an intimate, exclusive air. For yet more marble, check out the Bar Longhi, named after the artist's paintings which hang on the antique mirrored walls, where cocktails are served behind a unique Sicilian slab of the stuff. The terrace has a photogenic view of the Salute Church and the Grand Canal. Kick back and enjoy your gin and tonic in style.
