Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Judith, the owner, is still collecting original Art Deco pieces so the flavour of this hotel is not yet completely in keeping with the name. However, the six bright, cream bedrooms with iron beds (designed by Judith herself) are very appealing.

Rather unusually, the cheapest double in this hotel is the honeymoon room. Set in the attic, it is on the romantic/stifling side, and heavily sloping beams mean tall guests can only stand in one half of the room (there's no reason why your suitcases can't go in the low bit, though). Each room has one Art Deco piece at least, but for the best example of the style choose room 202, a junior suite with a complete set of original Deco furniture and an old plate-warmer. The hotel has their own personal gondoliera in Alexandra, the only female gondolier in Venice. Guests can arrange private gondola tours with her as well as learn about the history of these boats. The hotel also has a masseuse who can offer all kinds of in-room pleasurable pummelling.

Author Tip

Just around the corner from the hotel is Campo Santo Stefano, a large airy square with several bars and restaurants boasting tempting outside tables. Take an early evening spritz (Italian white wine with soda and Campari or Aperol) at one of these and enjoy the sounds of a string quartet against the setting sun.

Curious Fact

In the breakfast room is a strange but familiar object that you may be unable to place when you first see it. In fact it is a ferrlo, the end piece of a gondola which used to adorn Alexandra's boat - she now has a reproduction of the Doge Mocenigo's ferrlo which has a dragon on it.
