The Orseolo canal

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes You have to go through a secret gate to find Locanda Orseolo (no password required), but that only adds to the appeal of this welcoming, intimate hotel. With Carnevale-themed rooms, warm decor and attentive service, you'll want to keep this snug sanctuary to yourself.

The warmth of this hotel envelops you as you enter the front door or disembark from your water-taxi into the sitting room, with red-wood panelling and a beamed ceiling. The squishy sofas here are the ideal spot from which to trawl the mini-library. Equally inviting is the breakfast room with red leather banquettes, mirrors and Murano glass chandeliers (the breakfast gets good reports too). Of the 12 rooms, six have views of the Orseolo Canal. The higher you get the more you have to lean out of your window to see the water. The rooms are named after masks and are currently being redecorated to fully embrace the carnival theme. With murals, a description of the mask painted on the wall, gold-framed mirrors and up-lighters, the new-style rooms are fun and cosy. The old-style rooms are simpler but still nice looking.

After the Caffè Quadri turn onto the second street on your right (Sottoportego Cavalletto) up to Campo San Gallo and reach Corte Zorzi passing through the small iron gate located in Campo San Gallo. From Piazzale Roma and from Santa Lucia railway station You can use the ACTV public waterbus (line 1 or 82) that leaves every 10 minutes, taking you along the Grand Canal to St. Mark's Square (VALLARESSO stop). Once you reach the Square, please follow the instructions above.

Author Tip

There are just too many shops on your doorstep for you not to be tempted. From the usual Murano glass purveyors to Diesel designer sunglasses and Emporio Armani, your wallet will be tested. Later, if you have any money left, head to Piazza San Marco for a sun-downer.

Curious Fact

This area is called Orseolo after the family who lived here, which gave Venice three Doges. Look out for the family's coat of arms (two dancing bears) on the stained-glass windows.
