Quotes Just around the corner from the Frari Church, a discreet sign on a stone wall announces Oltre il Giardino's presence to the knowing guest. Behind the black doors lies a peaceful garden stretching the length of the house's facade, and the homey rooms would happily grace the pages of an interiors magazine.

The service in Oltre il Giardino is as discreet as its entrance. Indeed it's more like staying in a friend's house than a hotel (admittedly a very stylish friend). The six rooms are furnished with genuine antiques and excellent reproductions. Old pieces are upholstered in bright colours which seem to revive them (the 19th-century poker chair covered in turquoise fabric stands out) and there are interesting touches like an original Japanese kimono hanging on a wall, a purple cow-skin rug, silver oversized coat hooks and candelabra, colourful free-standing mini-fridges, a duck lamp-base and a silver trunk used as a TV stand. Turquoise and Green are the largest rooms (the latter has a private corner of the garden). Grey is a cosy option in the eaves, with fabulous stripey walls in the bathroom and a sexy iron bed. All of the bathrooms are divine.

The Fransiscan Chiesa di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is just around the corner from this hotel. It's Venice's largest church and one of its more important sites - it would be churlish not to visit. Afterwards sip a coffee or a spritz (Italian white wine and soda with Campari or Aperol) at the wonderfully decorated Caffè dei Frari opposite.

Curious Fact

Alma Mahler, the femme fatale whose second husband was composer Gustav and whose lovers included Klimt and Kokoschka, lived in this house from 1922 to 1935.
