A stylish newcomer to the hotel scene in Vientiane, the 'Art Hotel' is original in every sense of the word. The lobby is like an art gallery and the rooms are spacious, open plan and include thoughtful touches like wi-fi and an extensive minibar with a selection of teas.

Each of the rooms is named after one of Laos' many provinces and the floors are colour coded, with the decor shifting from pastel blues to reds to greens. All the beds are wrought iron and include stylish overhead reading lights. Lao textiles feature extensively and the place smacks of attention to detail throughout, like the crescent-shaped baths, which invite a soak. Getting to the rooms is an experience in itself, thanks to the elaborate spiral staircase running up the spine of the building. The location is another selling point, as if the place needed more. It is right on the riverfront overlooking the Mekong, and many rooms come with a view.
