There's no such thing as a 'bad' location in downtown Riga but even by Riga's lofty standards the Hotel de Rome occupies one fine perch, a stumble away from the centre of Old Town and a stone's throw from the Freedom Monument. You may find there's little reason to leave the hotel, given its museum-quality art, the views from its 8th-floor restaurant and the ebullience of its popular 3rd-floor bar, set around an impressive atrium. All the paintings are by top local artists; if you like a particular piece, chances are you can buy it. The fairly standard doubles are far from huge but some make up for it with great views of the Freedom Monument and the parks surrounding it. Attractive yellow tones prevail, and towels and linens are of the finest quality. You can get work done on a quirky wall-mounted table shaped like a shark fin (wi-fi access is a small daily fee). Most of the top-end amenities you'd expect for this price are in place, including tasteful wooden luggage racks. If there's a flaw it's in the windowsills, where we noticed some dust and a haphazard paintjob. Another big minus is the lack of air-con.

If you're feeling goofy, head to the Freedom Monument, break out your silliest dance and see if you can make one of the stone-faced guards laugh. Upper Kalku iela is full of bars and restaurants, including Nostalija and 4 Istabas. Livu Square and the outdoor skating rink are also nearby.
Opened in 1991, the Hotel de Rome was post-Soviet Latvia's first high-end hotel.
