There's nary a hair out of place in this masterpiece of a guest house, which is as classy and opulent as anything Vilnius has to offer. Where to start? The exquisite Italian furniture, the rooftop balconies overlooking the ruins of an old building in the courtyard, or the sensational scents wafting up from the kitchen of Vilnius' finest restaurant?

How about the full-length Villeroy & Boch bathtubs, the 19th-century Titanic-style fittings, bedding to die for, or its idyllic location in a hidden nook of the old Jewish Quarter? You'd think the rooms would be cluttered with all that expensive furniture but they feel remarkably airy and the suites are positively mouth-watering. Grotthuss is the family name of the German baroness who owns and runs the place - and indeed, it's fit for royalty without being too aristocratic or stuffy. There's also a wheelchair-accessible room and free Internet access. To top it all off, prices substantially undercut many of Vilnius' top-end hotels and are even less on weekends. Even if you don't stay here, make sure you don't miss dining at intimate La Pergola, which has outdoor seating on an English lawn in the summer.
