The Agneshof is a real pleasure: an oasis of calm with an upbeat, arty air, top-notch facilities and elegant, modern rooms. If you feel like some pampering, try the whirlpool and in-house health treatments.

Located in the best-preserved quarter of Nuremberg's Old Town, the hotel is tucked away in a quiet lane at the foot of the 13th-century castle. Though it's part of a chain, Sorat Hotels, there's little about the place that's pre-packaged. Facing a peaceful little garden, room 111 is typical of the 'standard' design, with tasteful lighting, sleek taffeta upholstery and a black-and-white chessboard pattern in the bathrooms. All rooms have a safe, cable TV with movie channel, telephone and wi-fi. The junior suites offer views of the Kaiserburg from a wide rooftop terrace.
