Address: Po box 1048, rarotonga, Vaimaanga , Rarotonga , Cook islands
Probably the best value accommodation along Rarotonga's south coast, if you can live without being directly on the beach. The five modern units might not be terribly Polynesian, but they're light, airy and deceptively spacious, with separate dining, lounge and bedroom areas, and a small patio area overlooking the lovingly-tended tropical garden. The self-contained units are arranged side-by-side in a one-storey motel-style building, and they've recently been rejuvenated with fresh colour-combos. The real bonus of the apartments is the interior space, which comes as a welcome surprise if you've stayed in some of Rarotonga's rather more modestly-proportioned bungalows. The family unit is particularly good value, with a couple of bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen and a really good-sized dining room and lounge. Obviously if you're after a honeymoon-calibre hotel, complete with the essential pandanus-thatched roof, sundeck and ocean outlook, then you should probably look elsewhere. But if you're looking to explore the island without taking out a second mortgage, you'll be hard-pushed to make your holiday money go further on Rarotonga. Owners Bruce and Nga Young are great characters and will make sure you're well looked after.

Take a short stroll east along the main road to check out the abandoned Sheraton resort - a grand financial folly that's responsible for over half the country's national debt - before hiking up to nearby Wigmore's Waterfall, a pretty cascade that lies at the end of the island's classic cross-island trek.
