Address: Po box 10, aitutaki, Aitutaki , Rarotonga , Cook islands
If you're not desperate to stay within earshot of the sea, then these four detached lodges, peacefully set around a secluded garden swathed with fruit trees, shrubs and delicate flowers, represent perhaps the best value anywhere on Aitutaki.Run by Manarangi Tutai Ariki (also known as 'Queenie' or just Tutai), one of Aitutaki's three ariki (high chiefs), the four lodges are all fully self-contained, with spacious, high-ceilinged bedrooms and large private verandas overlooking the gardens and the decked swimming pool area; there's also a small loft sleeping area that's tailor-made for kids. Perched right on the spine of the island, a good two miles or so from town, the garden lodges are a perfect option if you're looking for solitude and seclusion - the only visitors you're likely to see are a few of the island's resident mynah birds. The old-fashioned decor could do with a little freshening up, perhaps, but let's be honest - how often do you get the chance to stay with a queen?

Gina's is only a short walk from the best restaurant on the island, Café Tupuna, a family-run bistro that serves up gourmet dishes making extensive use of local ingredients (especially island fruit and vegetables and quite possibly the freshest fish you're ever likely to taste).
Gina also owns one of only two holiday properties on the otherwise deserted motu (islets) of Akaiami, out on the left-hand edge of the lagoon - ask if you're interested in staying there.
