This guesthouse opened with four rooms in 1990 and its popularity has seen it flourish to house 15 comfortably furnished rooms all with en suite bathrooms. Fortunately its growth hasn't encroached on the private garden out the back, which is a gorgeous spot for sipping coffee over the morning paper.Just off Kilkenny's main street, private off-street parking at the front and back of the building is a definite asset here. Owners Rosanne and John Brennan go out of their way to make guests feel welcome here. In your room you'll find a comprehensive booklet with loads of info about the city as well as super-comfy (and traveller-friendly) orthopedic beds. Windows in the front rooms are soundproofed to screen out street noise. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a pianist, guests are welcome to tinkle the keys of the piano alongside the dining room, where Rosanne brings out hearty hot breakfasts from the adjoining kitchen. Public areas also include a glassed-in conservatory and a quiet upstairs sitting room with a cosy gas fire. Throughout the house, black-and-white sketches of Kilkenny's famous landmarks grace the walls - ask Rosanne if you're keen to buy some of your own to take home as a souvenir.

Bregagh House is close to several Kilkenny landmarks. The Black Abbey was founded in 1225 and named for the monks' black habits. St Canice's Cathedral was built between 1202 and 1285, but prior to that it was the site of a monastery established in the 6th century by St Canice, Kilkenny's patron saint. St Mary's Cathedral is also nearby.
