Address: 18 michael st, City centre , Kilkenny , Ireland Show on map
You can see Kilkenny Castle across the city rooftops from the front rooms of this incredibly friendly, spick-and-span B&B run by artist Angela Byrne and her husband John. There are just a handful of neat and tidy rooms at this warm, welcoming place, all with their own en suite bathroom and modern pine furniture. TVs and tea- and coffee-making facilities are in every room. Scattered throughout the house are artefacts collected by Angela and John, both avid world travellers. Angela's art also brightens the house. On the ground floor the tile-topped breakfast tables are laid with black-and-white china, and the dining room (which has a snug open fire) opens out to a paved, private courtyard. As well as a full Irish option, you can also get a hot vegetarian breakfast or choose from eight different varieties of cereal. Off-street parking is provided free of charge.

Exploring magnificent Kilkenny Castle is one of the highlights of this medieval city. Work began on the stone castle in 1192, and recent restoration has revived its original splendor. As well as tours of the castle itself you can visit the Butler Gallery, one of Ireland's finest art galleries, and stroll the Celtic-cross-shaped rose garden.
Celtic House is a favourite with Lynn McGranger, better known as Irene from the Aussie soap opera, Home & Away. She stays here when she's in Kilkenny.
