Address: Rotušes aikšte 21, Old town , Kaunas 44279, Lithuania Show on map
For years Kaunas was a notoriously unfriendly place for the budget traveller. Not any more, thanks to this squeaky clean, dirt-cheap jewel. Housed in an old monastery wedged between two ancient churches off the main square in Old Town, it's every bit as charming as it sounds. As if the location weren't enough, the rooms while spartan - in keeping with their monastic origins - are perfect. Typically arranged in pairs with a shared bathroom, they have high ceilings, arched windows, blinding white walls and light-wood floors, and great views of the courtyard in back or Rotušes aikšte out front. They're functional too, with a nice writing desk and free cable Internet (granted, it wasn't working when we visited). There's even a communal kitchen, albeit an odd one with about 30 chairs, no dishes or counters, and one tiny sink. It's owned by the archdiocese of the Lithuanian Catholic Church, which also owns Domus Maria in Vilnius, you'll notice plenty of parallels. They have a strict no-drinking policy. You're paying chickenfeed, so deal with it. You will be hard pressed to find a better big-city deal than this in the entire EU.

The Postal Museum is in the same building, and there's plenty going on right outside your doorstop on Rotušes aikšte. Dilapidated Kaunas Castle is just a two-minute walk away, while Skliautas is a great courtyard cafe/bar on Rotušes aikšte 26.
