Some people love the Royal, some hate it: it seems to depend on what room you get. But it's worth considering because the service is really quite good, the renovated rooms are very nice and the prices, especially the midweek packages with breakfast, are too good to ignore.Located below Guia Fort and the lighthouse, the Royal is a little removed from the action but still only a 20 minute walk to Largo do Senado and less than five minutes in a taxi to the casinos. The recently renovated and quite stylish lobby is impressive, and if you check into a premier room you might feel you've found an absolute bargain. These rooms are not huge but they are very well appointed and have a fresh, sharp feel, with smart silks, smooth lines and free broadband internet. Some of the smaller standard rooms are less inspiring but they have all benefited from a renovation that has at least brought the decor up to date.

Guia Fort is the highest point on the Macau Peninsula and it's a short but steep walk up the hill. Above the battlements is the 15m-high lighthouse, built in 1865 and the oldest Western-style lighthouse on the China coast, and the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia, built way back in 1622.
