The 98-room East Asia, in a quiet street five minutes' walk from Largo do Senado, is one of Macau's better budget options. The decor is mid-1980s and while the rooms aren't inspirational they are unusually large and perfectly adequate.

The rooms are adequate but not places to linger. The staff is efficient and obliging, the location perfect and the rooms on the upper floors (6 to 8 are best) have fine rooftop views of the oldest part of Macau. For budget travellers, there's also a handy 24-hour internet cafe just up the street and cheap food joints abound behind Senado Sq. But this is a budget hotel, so there are downsides. The TV had 123 channels but only three were in English. The beds are rather firm and the centrally-controlled air-con can become positvely Arctic in the evening - bring something warm. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was that the doors to the balconies have all been sealed up. Shame.
