Perched opposite the golf course between the CBD, the Botanical Gardens and Mindil Beach, Barramundi is a good-value motel option with some mid-range trimmings thrown in to the mix. Room rates drop for longer stays and during the Wet.

Retro without meaning to be, the 22 spotless, spacious, old-fashioned rooms at the Barramundi all have TVs and kitchenettes. Built 40 years ago, the decor harks back to pre-Cyclone Tracy days, when frills were few, guests were rough 'n' ready and bathrooms were communal. Louvred windows mean views aren't a priority, but at these prices you won't hear anyone complaining. The air-con chills you out 24 hours a day or, if you prefer more natural climate control, the über-clean swimming pool is rimmed with a breezy paved terrace. Disabled access is predictably poor, but kids are most welcome. Lounge around with a good book, give Nugget the black cat a pat, roast a Barra fillet on the BBQ or just lose yourself in the nameless, faceless motel anonymity of it all…
