The big white Novotel indeed boasts an impressive atrium. Bedecked with potted palms and vines, the lofty space has dark timber flooring, a moodily lit cocktail bar, an esteemed restaurant, fountains and plenty of discrete tables around reception where business bods meet, greet and sip coffee.OK, OK, we know Novotel is a ubiquitous global chain and we've seen it all before, but what makes this one special is its position right on the Esplanade (the ocean views are to-die-for). And believe it or not, they manage to elevate stylistic standards well above the norm. Rooms feature subtle up- and down-lighting, fresh flowers, considerately matched wall and carpet colours, comfy furnishings and interesting indigenous-influenced wall hangings. Enjoy a room service breakfast on your balcony and breathe in the salty sea air before descending to the kidney-shaped swimming pool, one of best-looking puddles in Darwin. Off-season rates are a steal.

Hop in a cab and head about 3km (1.9mi) north to the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. The Cyclone Tracy exhibition will leave you rattled, and the indigenous galleries are absolutely stunning. And don't miss 'Sweetheart', the 5m resident crocodile (a taxidermic masterpiece). Saltwater crocs Sweetheart's size are extremely rare these days. Most grow to around 3m (plenty big enough).
