Close to the city but in an elevated area so the noise and congestion are minimised, this refurbished and friendly hotel housed in a century-old sandstone building has both basic and more luxurious rooms and apartments. The staff here are particularly friendly and helpful, and clearly proud of their good-value and reliable accommodation. The hotel is divided into two sections: the three-star rooms, housed in the older part of the hotel; and the refurbished four-star rooms and apartments on the newer upper floors. The no-frills three-star rooms are small and a bit cramped, but spotlessly clean and well priced. The four-star rooms are much plusher, with good views over the city from their private balconies. Apartment rooms have a full kitchen corner. There's a lap pool and a sundeck on the roof, and a cosy bar/brasserie with tables on the pavement outside.

The Astor Metropole is just across the road from the Roma Street Parkland, the world's largest tropical city park. At 16 acres it's one of Brisbane's most impressive green spaces. There are lily gardens, an Indian-style tea and coffee plantation, a rockery and native gardens to explore.
