At the southern end of the city, the Stamford has a historic facade in front of a modern tower. It competes with the Conrad Treasury in the swanky, historic hotel stakes, but the rooms and decor are more modern here than at the Conrad, and a bit more cheerful.

At weekends the Stamford is awash with rustling satin - this is one of the city's most popular wedding venues, and it's easy to see why. Tinkling piano music in the lobby creates an atmosphere of classy luxury, with acres of marble, giant flower arrangements and opulent furniture in the lounge area. Tables and chairs from the brasserie are set out in the shady, fountained courtyard, leading into the two-storey wooden edifice of the Pavilion bar. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a luscious pale green colour scheme that gives them classy elegance with a light, modern touch. The view is a major draw - giant glass windows look out over the broad brown sweep of the Brisbane River, with sandstone cliffs and green parkland in front of it. The suites have walk-in dressing rooms complete with make-up mirror and coffee machines - perfect for primping brides.
