This magnificent old sandstone building once played host to American General Douglas MacArthur, who used it as a base to conduct the Pacific campaign of WWII. Today it's been sensitively restored to house sumptuous self-catering apartments, and is understandably popular with visiting execs. The apartments here all differ slightly in decor and colour scheme, but they're all modern, elegant and stylish, with glass-topped dining tables, soft suede sofas, shiny wooden floors and various postmodern flower arrangements - think orchids in lacquer pots or bamboo in earthenware jars. The fabrics are rich and luxurious too, from deep green silk cushions to chocolate-brown suede bedspreads. Each apartment comes with a fully fitted kitchen. Most of the apartments also have spa baths in their marble bathrooms. Wireless and dial-up Internet comes as standard in the study, which also contains a sofabed for guests. There's no restaurant, but MacArthur guests can charge back anything they spend at Tattersall's private club and nearby Chill On Queen.
