This quirky guesthouse-cum-hostel has croaking plastic frogs by the front door, stone kookaburras in the garden and a warren of clean, basic rooms around a pleasant garden. It's a favourite with backpackers and tourists for its quiet location in suburban Spring Hill. The rooms at the Kookaburra are small but spotlessly clean and well equipped for the price, with cheerful bright blue bedspreads, sinks, fridges, fans and hanging space for clothes. The shared showers and toilets are also clean, but could do with a slight revamp as they're looking a bit dated and scruffy. The handy kitchens upstairs and downstairs have grills, kettles, a microwave and hot plates. There's also a snug little TV room with satellite channels, a shelf of novels to read and various bits of info about things to do in Brisbane. There's plenty of outdoor seating in the pleasant garden (the house itself is nonsmoking), along with a free barbeque, free parking, a laundry room and a payphone.
