Distinguished by the tall cupola of the slender, white clock atop its historic building, the two-star East Asia Hotel sets you right at the pumping commercial heart of East Nanjing Rd.

Located in the former Shanghai Sincere Department Store (which opened in 1917), the hotel is clean and in good condition. Double rooms are decent (with kettle) and staff polite and used to dealing with Western travellers. Your first instinct may be to take out the noisy saxophonist serenading punters daily across the street with a high-powered hunting rifle, but rooms are fine, although some are windowless. Double rooms overlook East Nanjing Rd - some with balcony and some with wi-fi are pricier; discounts for cheaper rooms frequently cut 50% off. A restaurant is on the 3rd floor. Spotting the hotel's clock tower is easy enough, but you will have to rummage around a bit to find the entrance: access is via a clothes store on East Nanjing Road (follow the signs to the hotel) and from there up to the 2nd floor either by the lift or the stairs.
