Discreetly located in the heart of the City, Threadneedles is an elegant boutique hotel that was converted from a 19th-century bank. Dating back to 1856, the original solid oak doors, marble columns and elegant hand-painted stained glass dome remain gorgeously intact.

The hotel is a favourite with business travellers, but its proximity to sites such as St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London make it an equally good choice for the London tourist. The 70 modern bedrooms blend effortlessly with the traditional features of the building, and richly coloured blankets and monogrammed pillows liven up each room. There are some lovely personal touches such as the selection of coffee books on display, which range from Harry Potter to Damien Hirst and the his-and-hers bath menus. The loft and terrace suites have private balconies and the penthouse suite has a huge private terrace with extraordinary views over the city. When the suits head off to work, this beautiful hotel can seem a little lacking in atmosphere, but if you time your sightseeing right, you'll be back in time for a post-work drink and a natter with the locals.
