No matter where you are in the world it's unlikely that a train station hotel would be your first choice for accommodation. Dingy bedrooms, grubby bathrooms and dubious clientele aren't a good combo for an ideal night's sleep. Fortunately, Andaz Liverpool Street is a break from that tradition.Originally the Great Eastern Hotel, the Andaz was designed by Charles Barry, the architect behind the Houses of Parliament. It first opened its doors in 1884 and many of the original architectural features remain today. Corridors had to be wide enough to accommodate cabin trunks, and the grand staircase and glass dome remain intact. The decor in the 267 rooms is contemporary chic with dark wood, white sheets and bold, fresh colours. Individual identities are asserted through either architectural features or design extras: the porthole-style windows give some rooms a '50s Hollywood feel.

Once you've finished rummaging through the antiquities on offer at Spitalfields Market, saunter across the Millennium Bridge and grab a classic at the famous Globe Theatre. If Shakespeare's not your thing then try Old Stfor, an ever-evolving array of edgy bars and clubs.
The design guru behind the Great Eastern Hotel's renaissance is Sir Terence Conran, who's known for his work on London's Michelin Building and the Design Museum.
