Technically apartments, it's only the addition of kitchenettes and a self-service laundry that differentiates these smart but reasonably priced studios (sleeping from one to three people) from a regular Victorian townhouse hotel.

These wonderful Victorian houses are such a staple in London, that it seems wrong to miss the opportunity to stay in one. Just in case you forget you're in Britain, there are artfully placed reminders: riding boots, a grandfather clock, a duelling sword, a copper kettle, a suit of armour. The best apartment is the sunny double opening directly on to the garden, which is filled with colour and fragrance in spring. The recently renovated bathrooms have smart grey tiles and still sparkling fixtures.
