Built in 1925 as the national Elks headquarters, this hotel retains an ornate and elegant lobby, while its rooms are smallish but contemporary. Nightclubs and theatres just outside the door add to the appeal. After becoming part of a national hotel chain, the Tremont's rough edges got smoothed out a bit and its character dulled in the process. Still, it's a comfortable and fun hotel, as befits any place that was once sprinkled with elk heads. What Marriott brings to the table, though, are modern room amenities like free high-speed Internet access, a free morning newspaper and ergonomic desk chairs. (Like many hotels in the area, this one gets plenty of business travelers.) You'll have to pay extra for a room - or more accurately, a suite - with a city view. You can dine in, but with so many good choices in the area, why would you?

The Roxy Nightclub, ensconced within a restored hotel ballroom at the Tremont Hotel, has been a deservedly popular hang-out for years. Across the street is the opulent, baroque and heavily gilded Wang Theatre built in 1925. Its cavernous space hosts extravagant music, dance and theater events.
