Cheap and utilitarian are the buzzwords at the HoJo. A classic American motel horseshoed around a parking lot, it provides a retro, pared-down lodging experience.Remember the old family vacation in the minivan you took as a kid? You likely stayed someplace just like the HoJo, which an early-1970s time machine seems to have dragged into the present-day Near North neighborhood. The location works well, with plenty of restaurants and bars perked up in the vicinity and the Magnificent Mile a 10- to 15-minute walk east. The free parking gratifies, saving 20.00 to 40.00 per day, which is what most hotels in town charge. The small rooms contain cable TV, a coffee maker, and, errr, not much else. The furniture is a few years past due for a renovation and there's no in-room internet (there is free wi-fi in the lobby). If you want a cheap place to rest your head at night, fine; those hoping for something more should look elsewhere.

Holy Name Cathedral, the site of two gangster-era murders, sits three blocks east of the hotel. In 1924, North Side boss Dion O'Banion was gunned down in his florist shop (738 N State St) after he crossed Al Capone. O'Banion's replacement, Hymie Weiss, fared no better. In 1926 he was killed on his way to church by bullets flying from a window at 740 N State St.
