If you snag one of the low-end rates, it'd be worth your while to stay at this high-rise motel steps from the Michigan Ave shopping bonanza. Pay more than 119.00 and the small, faded rooms start to seem way over-priced. Still, the location attracts scads of budget-conscious tourists. How much are you willing to pay for a primo location - if it comes with sagging couches, faded wallpaper and barely enough space to walk around two beds? This 191-room hotel is barely a block away from the Magnificent Mile, and you won't find anything cheaper this close. Just be careful not to go too crazy in the shops, or you won't have anywhere to put your packages: the rooms here are extremely small, bordering on cell-like. You also forgo things like a free breakfast and fun hang-out areas (say, a pool or cool lobby), but really, why would you want to dawdle around your hotel anyway, when so many attractions and good beers await?

The Billy Goat Tavern (tel: 312 222 1525; 420 N Michigan Ave, lower level) is three blocks south. Scruffy like the titular animal, this bar and burger joint is the legendary haunt of Tribune and Sun-Times reporters. Only the dimmest of bulbs orders fries with their cheezborger (remember John Belushi's famous Saturday Night Live skit: "No fries - chips!").
